HOUSTON INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER REPORTS NO MORE From 1968-86, one of our favorite TV investigative reporters here in Houston, TX is Judd McIlvain on KHOU TV CH 11. In fact, rumor has it that Judd persuades Marvin Zindler to join KTRK TV CH 13 as its most popular consumer reporter. A native of Indiana, McIlvain who graduates from the University of Missouri later moves to KCBS TV and KTTV TV in Los Angeles, CA. On Monday, March 9, 2015 Judd McIlvain passes away at 73 in his home in suburban Los Angeles.

NO JOY IN THREE DOG NIGHT In 1968, Jimmy Greenspoon along with Danny Hutton, Cory wells, Chuck Negron, Joe Schermie, Mike Allsup and Floyd Sneed form one of our favorite Rock groups Three Dog Night. We hear Jimmy’s voice on some of their biggest hits: Joy to the World, Black and White and Never Been to Spain. On Wednesday, March 11, 2015 Jimmy Greenspoon passes away at 67 from cancer (metastatic melanoma) in his home surrounded by his family in North Potomac, MD.
WTOP CANS LAURIE On March 16, 1943, 50,000 watt WJSV-1500 becomes WTOP-1500. Originally, WTOP at 1500 kHz is at the TOP of your radio dial Washington’s TOP News. In April 1997, Evergreen Media moves WTOP-1500’s news format to WTOP FM (103.5). In 2011, the lovely Laurie Cantillo replaces longtime Program Director Jim Farley. On Friday, March 13, 2015 America’s top billing news radio station Hubbard WTOP FM #1 in Washington DC does not renew Laurie Cantillo’s contract.
DICK TRACY’S WRIST WATCH IS HERE! For decades we kids dream of a modern-day version of comic strip hero Dick Tracy 2-way wrist radio watch to make us look like secret agents. On Monday, March 9, 2015 Apple CEO Tim Cook displays some very expensive smartwatches that appear to be identical to the famous Dick Tracy watch. The budget-price Watch Sport starts at $349; the steel-cased Apple Watch ($549-$1,049) and the ultra-high-end Apple Watch Edition with an 18-karat gold case starts at a dandy $10,000.

JEFF THOMPSON [NBC News, 30 Rockefeller Plaza] (Greensboro/Winston-Salem, NC) Subject: LBJ’s Chopper over Texas. Thanks Jim for sharing your story about seeing Lynda Bird Johnson with Tom and me…from back in ’69. By then, he & I were both long gone out of UT and working by that time in Boston & NYC commercial radio and TV. By the way, if you haven’t figured from my various notes, for the record, I was born in Stephenville, Texas on May 4th, 1937. All the best, Jim. – Jeff Thompson

STEVE EBERHART [Eberhart Broadcasting-KVIL FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Jack Woods Has Died. Jack Woods, legendary Top 40 radio morning talent and one-half of the famed “Charlie & Harrigan” duo, has died. Originally in afternoon drive at KLIF Dallas, in 1962, he was tapped to replace Tom Murphy of the “Murphy & Harrigan” show in mornings at KLIF. It was there the show was renamed “Charlie & Harrigan” and the legend began with partner Ron Chapman. Later Jack teamed with Paul Menard at KCBQ in San Diego and returned twice to KLIF, once in the mid 60’s and again in the mid 70’s, but the longest run of “C&H” was in San Diego radio. Woods and Menard were recently inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame and had also been inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. Woods was 80. (confirmed to me in a phone conversation with his son Bo Woods)

JAY WALKER [KJKK FM/KTSA/KTFM FM/CBS Radio/Jay Walker Productions] (Dallas-McKinney, TX) Subject: Jack “Charlie Brown” Woods has passed away. Jim, With sadness, I bring you the news that our radio family circle has become smaller again. The talent lineup in Heaven’s Top-40 station just gained another great talent… From the email I received from Steve Eberhart… Warmest regards to you and Susie. Jay
DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM [ex KXOL-1360] (Austin-Kyle, TX) I am sure you got the word about Charlie Brown, but here it is… http://thescoopblog.dallasnews.com/2015/03/jack-woods-half-of-klifs-beloved-60s-morning-show-charlie-harrigan-has-died-at-80.html/
CHUCK Dunaway [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: Jack Woods passes away! I was in constant email contact with him until my last hospitalization. Sad news. He was very happy and content the last I corresponded with him which was just a couple of weeks ago. None of us know when our time will come. That is why to waste a day is very foolish. TONY WILLIAMS [WKY-930/KRLD-1080] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: Katy…Couric… She bombed on “The CBS Evening News” as well as her syndicated talk show. Why would NBC hire her? I think someone is telling a whopper.
TRIVIA ANSWER: WSB-750 Atlanta, GA is the fourth Southern radio station to go on the air. WSB-750’s first employees are Walter Iller and Walter Tison. The first licensee with call-sign WSB is American steel cargo ship S.S. Francis H. Leggett but it capsizes and sinks during a storm. On December 18, 1919 WSB goes to the ship Firewood but ironically it burns off the coast of Peru. In March 15, 1922 WSB which means Welcome South, Brother ends up on 50,000 watt clear channel 750 kHz in Atlanta, GA.
