BILL CONWAY [Former PD/SM Entercom KOIT FM] (San Diego, CA) Subject: James Best & Gordon. I saw your obit for “Dukes” star James Best and was surprised you didn’t remember his connection to Big D radio legend Gordon McLendon. They starred together in the 1959 movie The Killer Shrews. Best had the lead and Gordon played a slightly mad scientist. Type casting? McLendon financed it and it was shot at his Cielo ranch. The World Premier was in downtown Dallas as a double feature with another Gordon McLendon production The Giant Gila Monster which featured KLIF DJ Ken Knox at a sock hop. The World Premier was a typical McLendon extravaganza. One more note on Shrews- Ken Curtis, Gunsmoke’s Festus, was also in the movie and has the Producer credit as well. Keep the stories coming!
