SPORTS FIGURE DARES ESPN TO FIRE HIM AND THEY DO For almost 15-years, ESPN personality Bill Simmons creates noteworthy documentaries such as Grantland and sports series 30 for 30. After Simmons calls NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell a liar on his podcast he dares his bosses at ESPN to fire him. And that’s what happens. ESPN President John Skipper releases an official press statement that confirms that ESPN will not renew its contract with Simmons.

THE DUKE SMASHES KNOXVILLE ROCK When Midwest Communications Rock WVRX FM (The X 95.7) Knoxville, TN flips to Classic Country Duke FM 95.7 it wastes very little time before it fires its entire air staff. Been there twice when Top 40 KXOL-1360 flips to Country in 1976 and in 1981 when KILT FM goes New Country. Gone from Rock WVRX FM are PD/PM Drive DJ Mike [Hurricane Shane] Schoenherr, midday DJ Scott Bohannon, night DJ John [Fister] Wilson, plus syndicated Free Beer & Hot Wings morning show.

CHRISTINE BLACK [NFL Films Music Manager] (Medford Lakes, NJ) Subject: Odd Radio related question — Houston 1980/song search. Hi Jim, I received your contact information from Grady McAllister as I stumbled upon his web page while researching a song/artist we are hoping to locate. He suggested your network of radio people might know of it or have some recollections that could help in our search. It is a long shot I realize, but I’m not having much luck otherwise. I’m trying to track down a song/artist (contact info) that was supposedly a huge radio hit in Houston in 1980…it was called “Snake Bite” and was written by John Norman (I read that he worked at the Hughes Tool & Die company at the time) and it was about the NFL Player Ken Stabler (whose nickname was “The Snake”). We’re doing a documentary on Ken Stabler so I’ve been tasked with trying to track this song and artist down for our producer and for possible inclusion in the film. I’m wondering if you or anyone in your retro Houston radio network recall this song, and/or would know anyone connected too it. Thanks so much. Best, Christine

JACK PARNELL [former Program Director/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Saturday evening May 2 (2015) I was inducted into the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame at the annual banquet & festivities in Murfreesboro, TN. I sincerely thank those members who nominated me and voted me in as a recipient. I especially thank my longtime friend and mentor Wink Martindale for introducing me via video, and my favorite client Bill Dance, whose “Bill Dance Outdoors” TV show, for whom I do all the voiceover work. Also, Johnny Dark (nee John Daugherty), who was inducted that same night, George Klein, Dave Brown, Tyler Hawks, and any others who nominated me, and especially my son Chris Parnell, former Saturday Night Live star, as well as starring in movies, TV sitcoms, commercials, etc. for his participation in the presentation. Thanks guys; I’m truly honored and grateful. Jack Parnell

ROBERT MILLER [Eastern Michigan University Professor] (Detroit/Plymouth, MI) Thanks Jim. Some of the good old places are gone. Hipps Bubble Room, The White House (Tom Ellis used to go there off North St. Mary’s and Josephine) Did you get one of those KBUC Sports Coats? Bob
TRIVIA ANSWER: During the 1950s Look bi-weekly magazine is our family’s favorite. On April 25, 1949 an article in Look magazine predicts that radio is doomed. Look says that within three years TV will overshadow radio completely. Sixty-six years later, radio still shines. Look magazine which publishes in Des Moines, IA last issue appears on October 19, 1971. Television, which FCC Chairman Newton Minow once calls a vast wasteland appears to be only half vast.
TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV NYC, WBZ TV Boston, MA & KONO-860/KONO TV news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Hi, Jim and Suzie, Remember Robert Miller, and the streets, but don’t remember the White House. Maybe I’m getting old? Tom
CHER (May 20, 1946 – p) Some guy said to me: Don’t you think you’re too old to sing Rock n’ Roll? I said: You’d better check with Mick Jagger .
