Austin, TX iHeartMedia Country KASE FM (100.7) announces The Raging Idiots Flood Relief Concert fundraising event at The Parish on June 3, 2015 with syndicated iHeartMedia Country talent Bobby Bones, host of The Bobby Bones Show and his Raging Idiots band to raise money for the Central Texas Chapter of the Red Cross.
IS COUNTRY RADIO CONSULTANT SEXIST? In April 1965 on my first radio station KASO-1240 in Minden, LA they tell us DJs to not play two female artists back-to-back. Radio consultant Keith Hill cautions radio stations against playing too many songs by women, and they shouldn’t be played back to back. This brings anger from some Music Row female artists. Hill receives death threats and name-calling. What do you think about the airing of female artists on Country radio? Let us know at Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.
TURTLES WIN OUT Flo & Eddie, founding members of 1960s Rock group The Turtles (Happy Together #1 for 3 weeks) win out in court against satellite radio SiriusXM over payment of royalties for songs produced before 1972. In September Judge Gutierrez rules under California state law, New York-based SiriusXM is liable for copyright violation when it airs the Turtles’ pre-1972 songs without paying them royalties. Flo & Eddie file $100 million lawsuits in California, New York and Florida for SiriusXM’s alleged neglect.

LEE ANDERSON [Morning DJ/GM on KNED-1150] (McAlister, OK) Subject: Retirement. Hello Jim. Really enjoy reading your news letter. After 54 years of doing a morning show, I am going to give it up Wednesday May 27th. It’s been a long grind with a lot of fun and have made a lot of good friends. First job was doing weekends on KBER in San Antonio in the early 60’s when that station had only been on the air about a month. Jerry Wilder did weekday mornings, Bob Wolfe did mid days and the engineer, Dick Jones did afternoons. KBER had to sign off at sunset. Myself and another engineer his last name was Swanson did weekends. In mid 1962 I met some folks building a new station in Pearsall, Texas. Moved there and worked for KVWG until late 1965. I had met a State Senator from Oklahoma who owned a station and he offered me a job, since my wife was from McAlester, Oklahoma, I accepted, and have now spent 50 years here. I also had job offers in Victoria and Corpus Christi when I moved here. I am still going to be General Manager and partner in Southeastern Oklahoma Radio LLC, which owns and operated KNED-AM. KMCO.FM, KTMC AM And FM in McAlester. I have been lucky enough to serve on The Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Board of Directors 13 years, was President one year. Keep the newsletter coming and keep up the good work…Sleepy Lee Anderson.

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM [ex KXOL-1360] (Austin-Kyle, TX) Subject: JIM ROSE REMEMBERS RADIO May 29, 2015 [Friday] Issue #1411. Thank you for the story on the floods, especially about the weather caster who lost his family. I know a fellow that was acquainted with Mr. McCombs (who survived) and had recently met one of his daughters who is missing. This is really a bit too close to me. The floods were about a mile away from where I live and I can only thank God that everyone in my area was OK. However, I am still stunned at the stories that are coming out in the media. It is like a horrible movie that just won’t end. Jeff Cunningham, DC, MA; Kyle, TX

DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) Scott Seagraves sent this in yesterday, I must tell you I got goose bumps listening to Morgan on KHJ in ’69 again. Whether you ever heard him live on air or not, he was one of the Triumvirate of Great Jocks: Morgan, Lujack and Imus. The only one left standing is the I-Man, and he almost bought it in an Horse riding accident a while back. I’ve been told that the loss of his friend and peer, Morgan, was very difficult for Don. Besides the loss of a friend, those kind of things can remind one of their own mortality. I can testify to that.
