ART RETURNS TO BIG ORANGE RADIO Los Angeles is The Big Orange because of its huge orange groves. It is also home of legendary radio air personality Art Laboe who reigns supreme in the 1960s on KDAY-1580. In February 2015 Laboe loses his 15-year L.A. flagship station when iHeartMedia KHHT FM (Hot 92.3) flips to Urban KRRL FM (92.3). On Sunday night, June 7, 2015 Art Laboe’s syndicated Oldies and dedications returns to L.A. on KDAY FM (93.5) Sundays 6pm-midnight. Keep up with Art Laboe at www.ArtLaboe.com/.

WKSC FM WIPES JORDAN OFF ITS SLATE While he attends the University of South Florida, Ryan [Jordan] Gorman hosts a popular political talk show. In 2002, he lands a radio position as an intern on Top 40 WFLZ FM (93.3) Tampa, FL. In October 2010, iHeartMedia hires Jordan as Assistant Program Director and air personality on Top 40 WKSC FM (Kiss FM 103.5) Chicago, IL. When iHeartMedia bids farewell to Jordan, it removes all mentions of him from its website plus his Jordan public social media accounts vanish into thin air.
A DJ AT WALMART? In response to employee grumbles about endless cycles of boring CD soundtrack from Justin Bieber and Celine Dion, Wal-Mart hires a DJ. Wal-Mart operates like a spaceship with control of its temperatures from its company headquarters in Arkansas. According to The Washington Post, Wal-Mart stores will stop never ending cycles of terrible music, plus it will give individual stores temperature control. DJ Walmart will run Walmart Radio from its headquarters in Bentonville, AR. Hopefully no hip hop or rap.

LEE ANDERSON [Morning DJ/GM on KNED-1150] (McAlister, OK) KBER (San Antonio, TX) was on 1150, 3 tower directional antenna daytime only. Was built in a trailer house. Lots of memories. One Saturday morning a 1950 Ford pulled up out front 2 guys jumped out one was carrying a guitar…the guy with the guitar came through the door and said hi I am Roger Miller and I want you to meet my friend George Jones. Neither had a hit record at that time.

MARY [Sam] STODDARD (Dallas-Frisco, TX) Subject: JRRR Remembers Mary Sam Stoddard’s Birthday. Mary Nash Stoddard Dear Jim – I’m honored to be remembered in Issue #1412, with the kind announcement of my June 3rd Birthday. Thank you. This year marks my 61st year Anniversary of my 1st regular gig in Broadcasting, with my Songs Just For You, KULP Gulf Coast Radio Station El Campo-Houston area in 1954. Went on to WACO; KORC; KLIF & KVIL to mention a few. Had the great fortune to have worked with some of the biggest and best, i.e.: Bill Young; Gordon McLendon; Ron Chapman; Jimmy Rabbitt, Ken Dowe and even the famous Golf Pro, Ray Floyd, when he was doing the Morning Show, in 1960, at KORC in Mineral Wells, TX. My voice can still be heard around the world on Internet Podcasts and Live Interviews, aired on Blog Talk and elsewhere every day. This fall, I’ll be awarding my TRHoF Award, “The Sammy,” to another outstanding Female in TX Broadcasting. Life is still exciting and rewarding for this pioneer TX Broadcaster/Journalist, on the 77th Anniversary of my birth on the beautiful TX Gulf Coast! Thanking you today, my talented Friend for remembering. Big hugs to you, Jim and your sweet Lady, Suzie — Mary “Sam” Stoddard TX Radio Hall of Fame’s The “Sammy” (1st Female DJ on Dallas Radio, KVIL FM, 1965)

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: me and the kings. One Saturday night when I was getting off the air at KILT in Houston someone (Bob White comes to mind) asked me if I wanted to go to Freddie Kings apt (close to the KILT Lovett studios) to hear him jam with Albert king. I said yes, of course and off we went. There were no more than five people in the apartment and we listened for about an hours’ worth of jam by these two legendary guitar players. Chuck (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/)
DERRILL HOLLY [ex KIKK FM news] (Arlington, VA/Washington, DC) Subject: Howdy Neighbor. My Texas Radio Hall of fame votes are in and one of them has YOUR name on it. You come out with a brand new edition of Jim Rose Remembers Radio and forget the guy that truly counts not just as an air talent, but a chronicler of the industry as we remember it and the less than stellar way of doing business that it’s become. I wish you well and have a feeling that 2015 is your year. All the best, Derrill E. Holly, Arlington, Va.
TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1949, RCA introduces the 7-inch 45 rpm single record as a smaller, more durable and higher-fidelity replacement for the 10-inch 78 rpm shellac discs. On June 5, 1954 Billboard magazine reports beginning in July major record labels will supply radio stations with 45 rpm single records instead of 78 rpm singles.
