DALLAS RADIO VOICE ON THE 6TH FLOOR DISAPPEARS From 1973-75 during my time as DJ on Top 40 KFJZ-1270 in Ft. Worth, TX we radio folks plead with our GM to move our AM format over to automated sister KFJZ FM to no avail. A few years later, KFJZ FM rises like The Acropolis of Athens as The Eagle Active Rock KEGL FM (97.1). One of its Program Directors, Gary Mack, who in 1994 becomes curator of The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza in Dallas, TX passes away at 68 from cancer on Wednesday, July 15, 2015.

NIKKI REPLACES THE CAT As we report earlier, after eight-years at Entercom Austin, TX, effective July 31, 2015 Cat Thomas resigns as VP of Programming of its five-station cluster. In radio things happen fast. We radio people play musical chairs much too often. As quick as a wink, Nikki Nite vacates California’s capital city to return to Texas’ state capital to top Cat Thomas as Entercom Austin’s VP of Programming and Operations. Prior to joining Entercom in 2009, Nite toils in Dallas, TX on KVIL FM (103.7) & KMVK FM (107.5).
DOJ BATTLES ENTERCOM WITH LINCOLN FINANCIAL TAKEOVER It is final. On Friday, July 17, 2015 Entercom closes on its prize Lincoln Financial Media and begins to operate the LFM stations. Entercom also gets cracking on Classic Rock KSWD FM (100.3 The Sound) Los Angeles, CA. Bonneville grabs Entercom’s former Denver, CO stations KOSI FM, KYGO FM, KKFN-950 and KEPN-1600. John Dimick LFM SVP of Programming & Operations exits radio for new profession with less strict dress code as an AAMCO owner.
ESPN EXODUS WITH THREE DOWN ESPN’s great talent exodus of 2015 witnesses the network’s loss of crusty voices Bill Simmons and Keith Olbermann. Colin Cowherd, ESPN radio lingo master since 2003, exits for possibly Fox Sports. This is the same guy who in May 2015 predicts: In the next five to ten years, I don’t even think they will have radios in cars. Sirius is the future. I think terrestrial (radio), AM especially, is done in five years. Radio stations are the next newspapers, ill-prepared to handle the tidal wave that is coming.

JACK PARNELL [former Program Director/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Carl Perkins. Afternoon Jim: In the fall of 1955, or possibly very early 56, Bill Haney, the guy I mentioned who was Carl’s friend, was also Johnny Cash’s friend; he and Johnny had been in radio school together here in Memphis, at Keegan’s School of Broadcasting. Neither Carl nor Johnny had a hit at that time, so Bill Haney asked them to come to the Milan High School auditorium and do a fund-raiser for the Student Government Association, so they both came, with Johnny on first. The crowd sort of didn’t like Johnny, mainly because of his lack of stage presence…they did enjoy his singing though. When he finished, Carl literally danced onto the stage, doing his very early releases, like “Movie Mag” and others, and the crowd went wild…not because they loved his songs, but because they loved his stage presence. He’s probably the only star in history to stay married to the same woman all of his married life! Great person. He used to show up at his restaurant “Suedes” when he was in town…it was in Jackson…and talk to people who were there, even buying lunch or dinner for many of them. Jack

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM] (Ft. Worth-McKinney, TX) Subject: Gary Mack passed away. Jim, I’m sad to report that former PD of Z-97 in Dallas, Gary Mack the curator of the Dallas JFK Museum passed away Wednesday after a brief battle with cancer. Gary was 68. 40 years ago Gary fired me which was the best thing that ever happened, as a result I got my act together. I sent Gary an email a few years back to thank him for firing me. He was sincerely pleased that my post firing career had included stops in Chicago and of course Dallas. He was a nice guy. The circle again grows smaller…Jay Walker Dallas TX

GARY DELAUNE [ex KLIF-1190/KRLD-1080 news/KENS TV CH 5 Sports Director] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Gary Mack dead at 68. FYI, JFK museum curator and former KXAS-TV and KFJZ-FM’s Gary Mack (AKA Lee Dunkel) has died after a brief illness. (www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Gary-Mack-Curator-of-The-Sixth-Floor-Museum-at-Dealey-Plaza-and-Nationally-Known-Authority-on-JFK-Assassination-Has-Died-315367411.html) / (www.garydnews.com)
TRIVIA ANSWER: At the 1976 Republican National Convention for Vice Presidential nomination, Bob Dole receives most votes with 85.04%. However, when still Dallas Cowboys quarterback, Roger Staubach snares same amount of votes as G.H.W. Bush for V-P. Each collects one vote. George H.W. Bush later becomes 41st President of the United States.
JANET LYNN [fine Texas Western Swing Hall Of Fame singer] (Austin, TX) (Johnny) Gimble was the same at any gig, including ACL TV show. We did three. One with the Legends of Western Swing, one with Charlie Pride, and then with Lacy J. Dalton. If he worked, I worked, lead vocals or back-up vocals. No matter how big or small the performance, Johnny was the same…we never really rehearsed…we would talk thru a song, arrange an ending of a song, etc…but until ACL, there was no real rehearsal…everything was off the cuff, and the motto was “heads up” to watch for his leadership. You had to be on your toes and know your stuff to work with Johnny. He was sweet but commanded the best of everyone and everyone wanted to please him. No doubt, on any given night, the band gave a 110% and kept our eyes open for any last minute improv. Blessings to all as I know he would want to be remembered so fondly. Janet Lynn Member of Texas Music Hall of Fame, 1999 Member of Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame, 2000.
HARVEY ECKSTEIN [former WNBC-660 manager of finance and administration] Wall Street and corporate America have gotten into radio, and it’s no longer a people business.
