On Friday, July 31, 2015 legendary Chicago, IL air personality John Records Landecker exits his 8-11pm spot on Cumulus Classic Hits WLS FM. Beginning in 1972, we hear Landecker as the night Rock and Roll Hall of Fame DJ on WLS-890 where he rules the Windy City ratings roost for a decade. John Records Landecker’s marvelous 40-year radio career on Chicago’s airwaves ends on Friday night with his final show.

MIKE KELLAM [ex KHFI FM/KHFI-970, NBC WMAQ-670 engineer] (Estes Park, CO) Subject: KHFI’s TV station in 1966. Hi, Jim! Good to hear from you. Hope I can come by again sometime, but it may be awhile. KHFI AM-FM-TV (KHFI stood for Kennedy Heard Features, Inc. – Rod Kennedy, a local promoter in Austin who previously owned the FM station). I believe that Rod Kennedy continued to own some small interest in the Southwest Republic Corporation. In 1966 the TV station went on the air as Channel 42. It was a project of the Southwest Republic Corporation, a group rumored to be Republicans. Southwest Republic acquired an AM station at 970 AM, whose call letters I cannot recall, and changed them to KHFI-AM. The venture brought Ridge Radney, TV program director, from KPRC-TV, Channel 2, in Houston, along with Al Beck as chief engineer, who hired me shortly after TV went on the air. Dan Love was the General Manager, and I believe that he had some broadcasting history in Austin prior to the Southwest Republic project.

JACK PARNELL [former Program Director WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Anita (Wood) was a beautiful girl. I think I only met her once, and she was also extremely nice. I grew up in Milan, TN, which is near her hometown of Jackson, TN. I was senior in high school when I began at WKBJ in Milan. Interestingly, she turned Elvis (Presley) down when he asked her for their first date. She already had a date for that night, and told him straight out that she was NOT going to break it. She went on to marry a pro football player, and I can’t remember his name…I think he died quite a few years ago. JP

JANET LYNN [fine Texas Western Swing Hall Of Fame singer] (Austin, TX) Working with Johnny (Gimble) was also very different. He came from the days where female singers were a “feature” and not a front person. So he’d call me up for 2-4 solo songs and expect me to be “on” right out of the chute whether I had any warm up or not. Of course, he called upon me to sing the specials and was asked to sing his compositions on the ACL TV show. The point is he surrounded himself with good people, took young people under his wing, and allowed them to shine. I was one of the lucky ones to go to the School of Gimble. Dayna Wills, Bob Will’s niece, is a close friend, and she said today that she knows “Johnny and Uncle Bob are already sharing fiddle licks and stories.” And let’s not forget that Playboy magazine once said Johnny was “the best d*** mandolin player in the world.” And he was amazing on mando. I hope this tells you a bit more about Johnny and the good man, family man, he was. Johnny swings with wings! Blessings to all as I know he would want to be remembered so fondly. Janet Lynn Member of Texas Music Hall of Fame, 1999 Member of Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame, 2000.
TRIVIA ANSWER: On July 13, 1923 real estate firm Woodruff and Shoults erects landmark HOLLYWOOD sign to promote new housing development in Los Angeles, CA. The HOLLYWOOD sign overlooks the community spells out its name in 50-foot (15-meter) high white letters originally says HOLLYWOODLAND. The real estate firm does not intend for the huge sign to be permanent. But, it quickly becomes an internationally recognized landmark. In 1949, they remove the last four letters LAND to make it simply HOLLYWOOD.
CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) I rode the train home to Scarsdale (NY) with Jack Lescoulie (NBC TV’s Today show) when I worked at WABC and he departed at White Plains (NY). He always made a deal of being on the train so he’d be noticed. He had some really big teeth. Memories. Chuck (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/)
ERLE STANLEY GARDNER (July 17, 1889 – March 11, 1970) It’s a d*** good story. If you have any comments, write them on the back of a check.
