BILL GARDNER [ex WIBG-990 DJ] (Las Vegas. NV) Good Morning Jim… You are spot on again about call letter flips. And changing those call letters never seems to make a radio station any bigger, does it? All that change does is cloud the past. Certainly not trying to nitpick you. Just wanted to keep that accuracy of yours at 100%. Thank you again for all you do. TONY WILLIAMS [WKY-930/KRLD-1080/Metro Traffic] (Dallas, TX) Subject: “It ain’t over, ’til it’s over”. Yankees Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra dies at 90. Yogi Berra, the Hall of Fame catcher renowned as much for his dizzying malapropisms as his record 10 World Series championships with the New York Yankees, has died. He was 90. The name, “Yogi” comes from a childhood friend who said the snake charmer in a movie looked like Berra. In the grueling role of catcher, Berra caught the only perfect game in World Series history in 1956. Berra told the Saturday Evening Post. He was a fan favorite, especially with children, and the cartoon character Yogi Bear was named after him.

CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: 1480. I have noticed that 1480 here in Dallas seems to have left the air. Not sure if this is permanent but have gotten several other stations on the frequency. I think CBS Radio may go the way of Mutual Broadcasting System, but when your programming is no different than the competition what does one expect. I also dislike the labels, conservative and liberal. Often it is used to dis a person without offering any real solutions and often hide from having to discuss the issues. I have heard talk show hosts talk over guests, never let the guest talk. I remember when C. P. Snow was on Dick Cavett, and they discussed issues and not personalities and fashion.
KBOX-1480 In Radio Locator, 1480kc frequency no longer exists in Big D. Wow! In the 1950s up to 1966, KBOX is a wonderful Top 40 radio station. In summer 1966, when I’m noon-3 pm DJ on KPCN-730, KBOX flips to modern Country radio format with huge success. From 1971-72, when I’m newscaster and mobile news reporter on KBOX-1480 it is a hot Country radio station. But, over the years its format and call letters change so often that its listener base disappears. Now, 1480kc frequency in Dallas, TX is silent.
[Gentleman] JIM CARTER [KCBQ/KNUS/WFAA/KONO/KLIF/KXOL] (San Antonio, TX) Jimbo: KLIF 1190 (1977), WFAA 570 (1969)/820 occasionally when the morning guy overslept, Yes to KONO (1974 & 1979 thru ’82), KNUS (1969 & ’77), KCBQ (1968), KXOL (1974)… Dat’s it! Go Rangers! Gentleman Jim Carter/San Antonio, Texas
TRIVIA ANSWER: In August 1927, WGL-1020 studio manager Charles Isaacson announces one of NYC’s first attempts at local news coverage. WGL-1020 requests its listeners to volunteer as radio reporters and to call WGL-1020 with breaking news stories. On September 16, 1928, WGL-1020 flips its call letters to WOV. Sicilian-born importer John Iraci buys WOV-1020. A Fort Wayne, IN radio station picks up the WGL call letters and still uses them to this very day.
CC MCCARTNEY [former KRBE FM DJ] (Nashville, TN) Subject: Howdy! Reading your latest, and thinking of you, hope all is well! CC McCartney, Nashville
