HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY WSM-650! These days radio stations change call letters as often as babies change diapers and they wonder where their listeners go. Legendary radio stations that keep their original call letters remain at the top of the heap. Nashville, TN’s 50,000-watt blow torch WSM-650 celebrates its 90th birthday with an open house, plus lets its visitors tour its transmitter site in Brentwood. They watch WSM-650 DJs broadcast their shows live, admire artifacts from WSM’s history and enjoy WSM’s birthday cake.

With Trump set to speak at the Oklahoma State Fair Friday evening, September 25, 2015 he now operates 93.3 The Donald with a goal to Make Radio Great Again! The real excitement is playing Country music. I hope you like my new station. America’s station!
CHICAGO TRIBUNE OFFERS STAFF LIFE PRESERVERS Tribune Publishing seeks to gently push out dozens of its employees to trim $10 million dollars by the end of October 2015. Before Tribune tosses its employees off the ship, it offers a life preserver farewell compensation of one week’s pay for every year they are with the newspaper. If Tribune’s gentle and voluntary approach does not work, Tribune may boldly ask members of its staff to exit before the Christmas holidays. So much for employee loyalty.

JACK PARNELL [former Program Director WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Afternoon Jim: That “Play Misty For Me” was quite a movie wasn’t it? You and I know firsthand about some of that. I guess all disk jockeys at one time or another have experienced something similar. Kind of amazing how radio was so popular back in the 50s especially, then began to taper off somewhat. I remember phone calls requesting songs, that turned into offers, all of which I turned down of course. JP

BUD BUSCHARDT [WFAA TV CH 8 Director, ABC sat radio DJ] (Dallas, TX) Subject: KTVT Dallas Studio. Jim, I noticed you have had some comments about the now vacated KTVT (Channel 11) studio on Central Expressway between Meadow Lane and Walnut Hill. A friend of mine worked in that building. He says that KTVT opened the building in 1966 to offer the Fort Worth located station a Dallas branch especially for news. There were anchors and reporters in both Dallas and Fort Worth. Since the news originated at night, the studio was used for local commercial production during the day. The Dallas sales office was there until 1977 and the Farmer Stockman (newspaper) shared office space with the television production and sales departments until the early 1970s. Recent plans to move KTVT to the CBS tower on Central near Henderson/Knox failed. The Dallas facilities are now located on Central Expressway near the Coit exit. (It is sad to see that KTVT building boarded up, but sadder for me to see the former ABC Radio Networks building on Montfort pitch dark at night.) This is probably more information than you need, but I know you are a skilled editor! Best, Bud

TRIVIA ANSWER: The only person to have 5 Hollywood Walk of Fame stars is Cowboy actor & singer Gene Autry with five Stars in film, radio, TV, stage and records. Gene stars in many movies, plus he records several hit records. Autry owns his own baseball team, California Angels, and he owns Golden West Broadcasting radio & TV stations.
CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: Milo. I’ve been reading some of the comments about Milo Hamilton. I’m sure you’ll agree that he gave one of the best acceptance speeches ever at the TRHoF when he was inducted. I had the extreme pleasure of speaking with him after the ceremony. He was warm and friendly and made a great impression on Kendall. He came and left alone that night.
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT (October 11, 1884 to November 7, 1962) Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.
