BRAD MESSER [ex KLIF-1190, KTSA-550] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Radio & Records. Hi, Jim: Along about 1977 after I left KMET/Los Angeles to return to a McLendon station in Dallas, my longtime colleague from KGB/San Diego, Jesse Bullet, called and said hey, there’s a new trade newspaper named Radio & Records that’s just getting started and you ought to send them something. I did. Owner Bob Wilson called and hired me to write a radio news/journalism column and I ended up doing that for 13 years. I only went out to L.A. to meet with Bob and his managing editors, and attend an R&R convention, a few times. Never worked in the office. Once during the early years Bob called and said things were getting very tight and he couldn’t pay his columnists any longer. He told me about one of them who said Bob, when you get some more money, call me. I said Bob, I stick with my friends when they’re going through tough times. I’m going to keep writing for you free. It wasn’t long until R&R’s revenue was back up and they resumed paying me. That R&R job along with my syndicated program for Westwood One enabled me to take a few years off from radio and buy a play farm in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina, spectacularly beautiful country. Eventually Carole and I came down from the mountains and returned to the daily grind. I had a wonderful time during my 47 radio years. Someday, take a look at my So-Called Career at www.bradmesser.com/J2_Career/Career.htm Best regards, Brad and Carole and Blondie
