LEN HART [former KILT/KENR/KNUS newscaster] (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, I was officially “News Director” for KILT-FM; Jim I was –of course –News D for AM which was still the “fair haired boy” : ) Bill Young, of course, knew that FM was the wave of the future. Robert B was inside and broadcast solely on AM at the time. I cannot recall the name of the outside guy at the time. It was “something” Daniels. I think he later went to KTRH. In any case, after about a year, I was offered News Director with KNUS (Dallas). I took it and, for awhile, did the morning news block as Ken Dowe was doing his ‘Granny Emma’ routines during the morning, KNUS was Gordan McClendon’s new baby. KLIF was AM, old technology. FM was the wave of the future. Carola was happy to get me back to KILT. Your friend, Len

BILL BRAGG [Voice of Big Tex The State Fair of Texas 2002-2012] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: Empty KTVT Studio on North Central. I enjoyed Bud’s comments about the empty KTVT Studios on North Central Expressway! I grew up very near that location and I stopped by every day during its construction to beg for a job. I found out what time the big boss from Ft. Worth made his daily visits to see the progress on the building; and I planned MY visits accordingly! I was the first one to be hired at that location. We did production during the day (working with folks like Sonny & Cher, Dick Van Dyke, Carol Burnett to name a few) and then we took turns to come back at 9:30 PM to run camera on the 10 o’clock News. JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas/Fort Worth, TX) Subject: Decreasing AM coverage. Charles George had mention he was having difficulty hearing 1390 around Dallas. The problem KBEC and all the other AM broadcasters are dealing with these days is the Dramatic increase in the spectrum noise floor caused by hundreds of new electronic devices unheard of in decades past. Pull into any convenience store parking lot and you find the AM band blasted with interference from lights, automatic door sensors, switching power supplies, an other devices to the point where only the local 50k AM is listenable, maybe. I recall reading reports that the ambient noise floor has risen 60db or more in some urban areas. That’s one of the many troubles the AM band faces… Merry Christmas Jim! Jay Walker

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: Media Confidential: December 7 Radio History. That 13 month stint at WABC helped get me a permanent spot in the history of radio. I disliked NYC so much. I left. I gave notice when I was ten months into the gig and Hal Neal took another three months while they searched for my replacement. My six year contract had six years with a renewable each year. I believe Herb, Bill Owen and I are the only survivors…Chuck
