TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV NYC, WBZ TV Boston, MA & KONO-860/KONO TV news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Think I might have told you before…but here’s the line my first Journalism prof at UT gave me at the beginning of the first class…”If you’re writing for TV news, it’s impossible to be too concise”. Same would apply to Top 40 Radio News format…and you have incorporated it into JRRR.

LIZ PATRANELLA [Liz Houston – KTSA-550, KBAT-680] (Austin, TX) Subject: Sad News to Share. For those who may not have yet heard, we have lost another dear member of our SoSARB family. Betsy Britton passed away Saturday night in her home. Betsy was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in November and was always a bright light at all our get-togethers. Below is a message posted by her daughter. Our condolences to her family….we will miss you, Betsy. ‘Last night my mother passed away in her home. I’m not sure on the details of how or why just yet but as soon as I know I will let you all know. I know all of you meant so very much to her and your prayers is what she really needs right now. I know my mother is now finally resting, in no pain, and running around taking big deep breaths. I love my mother and already miss her so very much. If anyone has any questions feel free to message me on here or on my fb Saundra Reyna’.

LEN HART [former KILT-610/KENR-1070/KNUS FM newscaster] (Geneva, Switzerland) Jim, From KILT, I went to KENR …don’t ask for dates : ) I worked with Hal McClain in the afternoons. Bill Bailey was doing mornings. I knew him but never anchored during his show. Hal was hanging around with Hank Williams Jr in those days. I often wondered if the two of them were ever sober. Hal —as you may recall –was a pilot and did stunt flying at air shows just for the fun of it. One day, it caught up with him. It was, I believe in San Antonio, when he smashed into the ground vertically. Your friend, Len
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger – East Coast radio icon] (San Angelo-Abilene, TX) Subject: DJ’s second annual convention in Miami. Jim: Brings back some fun memories, indeed About 30 top rec. artists also performed, incl: Pat Boone, Johnny Horton, Lloyd Price, Vic Damone, etc. A gala event & I retain the entire program-book. Believe Paul Berlin was on a panel or moderator for a session. I flew there from Tampa on Eastern. Thx for sending this reminder. BOB & Sonny Lee.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Dick Petrik begins his radio career as the first News Director of KOEL-950 in Oelwein which is near Cedar Falls-Waterloo, IA and remains for 41 years from 1952 to 1993. Petrik holds the record for longest tenure of any news director in America. On December 26, 2004 longtime Iowa radio personality, Dick Petrik, dies at 76.
CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KLIF-1190, KILT-610] (Houston-Katy, TX) Knowing Lash (LaRue)…I guarantee he was selling the pix with autograph for ten bucks. The vids he was selling in SC were home duplicated by him. By the way, not relevant to the story I sent you, but Lash wrecked his old caddie convertible on the way back to North Carolina the next day. He was a sweet man who told us that he almost killed himself trying to learn to use the whip to get the movie part. He said the whip kept snapping back and cutting his back when he first was learning how to use it. The movie company sent out a call for a cowboy character who could use the whip…He taught himself to use the whip in one day…that is when and how Al LaRue became “Lash” LaRue. Take care. Chuck (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/)
JOHN WAYNE (McLintock 1963) Don’t say it’s a fine morning or I’ll shoot ya.
