JACK PARNELL [former DJ/PD of WHBQ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Jack Eaton. Jim: One of the best sports announcers in the Midsouth, “Big” Jack Eaton, who had a great career at WMC am and WMC-TV here in Memphis, died last week after a long term illness. When The University of Memphis was Memphis State, Jack traveled with them everywhere with his inimitable basketball and football game descriptions, especially when Every fan loved him. His big shouts he used as the teams fought it out were: “Great Scott” and if it was dramatic enough, it was “Great Caesar’s Ghost”. He had many offers to move to greener pastures, but he was perfectly happy in Memphis…and we were all glad. He retired a few years ago and became ill shortly thereafter. Jack Parnell-former DJ and PD-WHBQ Memphis, TN.

BILL CHERRY [Realtor in late 1950s Music ’til Dawn host on WWL-870] (Dallas, TX) Jim, This no extra money stuff is the plague of age. We made a disastrous mistake when we left Galveston for Dallas. My income really dropped, and I hadn’t in my wildest dreams have thought that would happen, so I definitely sympathetic with you. Yes, I copied and pasted Chuck’s (Dunaway) web address. Irrespective of your web problems, I think this issue was a really good one. Glad we’re friends. Bill
MIKE MARSHALL [ex DJ on WFAA-820/570, KFJZ-1270, KQUE FM] (Houston, TX) Subject: I Was A DJ When DJs Jockied Discs… And I Don’t Mean CDs. I usually leave my car radio on the NPR station in Houston, but occasionally I’ll tune in the Hot Hits frequency to hear what’s happening in “The Latest Hits” radio. I can’t understand the lyrics, the tune seems to have no more three notes and I can’t distinguish any actual instruments, guitars, pianos, drums, saxes, etc. Wouldn’t it be great to see the reaction of their listeners if they were to add “Bridge Over Troubled Water” to the rotation for a few days? I would like to think a few of them, upon hearing a real classic piece of music would say, “Wow, that’s fantastic. Who is that?” S&G’s careers got re-started when some jock started playing The Sound of Silence off their first album.
TRIVIA ANSWER: On May 2, 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt presses a ceremonial button that officially launches WLW’s 500-kilowatt signal. WLW receives complaints from around the United States and Canada that it overpowers other radio stations as far away as Toronto. In December 1934 WLW cuts back to 50 kilowatts at night.
JIM [Catfish] PREWITT [ex KLIF-1190, KLUV FM, KKBQ FM, KITY FM, KTFM FM, KNCI FM] (Bedford-Dallas, TX) Hi Jimbo….Yeah it was cold yesterday and windy too! Warming up for the next several days here in the Big D. Ya never know about North Texas weather. One thing I don’t miss about Houston is the HUMIDITY. Have you noticed a lot of people in their 60s is dropping off. We could be the first generation that won’t outlive our parents! How are you? Jim (www.JimPrewitt.com)
JESSICA SAVITCH (February 1, 1947 – p) News events are like Texas weather. If you don’t like it, wait a minute.
