THE BIG C OVERCOMES BLUE-EYED SOUL SINGER In 1969 we hear some mighty fine Rock-n-Roll tunes. One female voice that captures me is Rock group Smith’s lead singer Gayle McCormick’s rendition of Burt Bacharach’s Baby, It’s You which rises to #5. My goodness! What a voice! In summer 1969, Dennis Hopper includes Smith’s cover of The Band’s The Weight in his popular movie, Easy Rider. On Tuesday, March 1, 2016 Gayle McCormick passes away at 67 from cancer in suburban St. Louis, MO where she grows up

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Jim: I was saddened to see the story about John Rook’s death. While I never actually knew him, he was well known around the nation as one of the great radio men. I’m very sorry to hear of him. Jack Parnell
DAVE MICHAELS [former WSAI-1360/KONO-860/KBUC FM] (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) Subject: Monday Morning. Jim, Another fine update on Ray Scott in your JRRR! How are you doing this fine Monday morning in Houston? Dave

ED MILLER [ex KPCN-730 OM/PD] (Austin, TX) Subject: John Rook. Sorry to hear about the passing of John Rook. While I never had the chance to work for him in the really big-time, I did have a chance to operate under his tutelage at KXOL in Ft. Worth during it’s early 1970’s R&R days, and then again at KTLK in Denver in the same era when it, too, was a hot rocker. My biggest lesson from Rook was learning that, to eliminate tune-outs and maintain good ratings, what you did not play was even more important than what you did. He was a master of our trade. Ed Miller (KOKE, KPCN, KFJZ, KXOL, KTLK, KAMC, KAFM, KRLD, KIXL, Texas State Network)

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM [ex KXOL-1360] (Austin-Kyle, TX) Bob Guthrie was likely the most credible newscaster I ever had the pleasure to work with. In the 1980’s, he did a story in which he went off script and ad libbed that the INS was going to begin deporting Mexican-Americans in the area shortly. The management of the station got a call from a fellow named Mr. Ramirez from the INS, who was irritated beyond belief. “The INS deports MEXICANS, but we do NOT deport Mexican-Americans!” A bit of reality from the PC world we are in. Bob was a guy that was impossible to dislike and a true professional. To this day I couldn’t tell you his political leanings. I hope heaven has an opening for a great newsman. Jeff Cunningham, DC
TRIVIA ANSWER: Myron Cope, National Radio Hall of Fame color commentator of Pittsburgh Steelers radio broadcasts for 35 years invents the Terrible Towel for Pittsburgh Steeler fans to wave during NFL games.
JAY WALKER [KJKK FM/KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Jay Walker Prod/40 Plus Years In Radio] (Ft. Worth-Hurst, TX) Hi Jim Got the latest news letter and was reading Jack Parnell’s thoughts. Jack you are so correct. It seems today’s “talent” has no clue on the concept of flow and as far as being ‘concise’ I don’t think that word even registers in their vocabulary. With the recent losses in our industry, John Rook, and Charlie Tuna come to mind, in addition to mourning the loss of those individuals I also mourn the loss of the concepts they programmed by. John was all about flow and concise delivery. Charlie Tuna the master of concise delivery, lead the way in being ‘tight, bright, and out of sight’ with his ability to deliver the setup, joke, and punch line in less than a 10 second intro complete with time and call letters. Today’s ‘talent’ is lucky to get it done in three minutes. As I tell those I’ve mentored, ANYBODY can be funny in 3 minutes, only “TALENT” can do it over an intro. Best wishes to all… Jay Walker
ANTON CHEKHOV (January 29, 1860 – July 15, 1904) Conciseness is the sister of talent.
