LAST SESSION FOR FIFTH BEATLE Liverpool shopkeeper and music manager, Brian Epstein, insists that George Martin listen to a local quartet. Decca Records already turns down The Beatles saying that guitar groups are on the way out. George Martin guides The Beatles’ transformation from rowdy club act to musical and cultural icons. Adam Sharp, CA Management founder, calls Martin one of music’s most creative talents and a gentleman to the end. On March 8, 2016 Sir George Martin dies at 90 in London.
FORMER CLEAR CHANNEL RADIO IN DEEP WATER In 2008, through a leveraged buyout, Clear Channel Communications with headquarters in San Antonio, TX begins to operate as CC Media Holdings. On September 16, 2014, CC Media Holdings rebrands as iHeartMedia, Inc., and Clear Channel Communications becomes iHeartCommunications, Inc. A share transfer might help iHeartMedia whittle down some of its $20.6 billion debt. Over the next three years, iHeartMedia, faces close to $10 billion in debt due. Sell those radio stations!
SPACE CITY SPORTS RADIO GAINS NEW LEADER In 2013, Ryan McCredden exits KQTH FM and KFFN-1490 in Tucson, AZ to join Sports Talk duo KILT-610 and KIKK-650 in Houston, TX to replace Gavin Spittle, who exits CBS Radio’s Houston cluster to become program director of its talk stations in Dallas. Also, Ryan spends four years with CBS Radio in Dallas. In March 2016, Program Director Ryan McCredden signs a renewal pact to continue leading CBS Radio’s programming of Sports Talk KILT-610 and KIKK-650 Houston, TX.

GARY DELAUNE [KYTY-810 – ex KLIF-1190/KRLD-1080 news/KENS TV CH 5 Sports Director] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Three San Antonio personalities. March 5th – Sorry to hear about John Rook. He was a great talent. San Antonio has lost three media members who left quite a legacy in their respective fields. Dr. Buckner Fanning, perhaps the best Evangelist in the country next to Billy Graham, passed away in recent days and two services in local churches were packed houses as his 42 years at Trinity Baptist Church and his sermons touched so many. He was a master of the .30 second vignettes. On March 6th, as we remember the Alamo, one of the excellent radio/TV veterans will be remembered at a local funeral service. Fred Lozano, a history buff, especially about the Alamo, had been a 35-year news anchor at KENS-TV but began his career at KONO Radio a half century ago. Finally, one of the greatest radio voices in Texas, 50-year veteran of WOAI, Bob Guthrie will be laid to rest after services on March 7th in San Antonio. They meant so much to San Antonia’s and to the communications business. Gary DeLaune (www.garydnews.com)
