JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: My thoughts about radio About a year ago, Flinn Broadcasting in Memphis, who owns WHBQam 56, my old alma mater, took WMPS-1210 am and made it all oldies…playing the best of all, and not just the top ten etc., which soon gets old for most of the other oldies stations. They’re not totally live, but Dr. George Flinn, the owner, set up a format that plays the many records that go deeper and grab songs that were turntable hits, along with of course the top ten, from the 40s thru the 60s, even the top country songs, and they feature certain times a female introing special songs and doing a little background on some of them. She’s recorded, but makes it sound live. George himself records interesting facts about the years gone by, then plays back phone calls that get recorded throughout the day. They also simulcast on 103.1fm. It’s also streamed on the internet, so they get complimentary calls from overseas, as well as across the U.S. I don’t know how their numbers are, but they get loads of calls. Tune ’em in at: “sunny1210.com”. I’m sure they’re not the only station doing it, but I do believe some stations like that are beginning to do exactly what the FCC said many years ago that all stations were “licensed to serve their listeners in their city of license”. Jack Parnell–former WHBQ-Memphis morning man/pd. (many years ago!)

ANDY WALDROP [Engineering Assistant transmitter site maintenance/construction Houston Public Media KUHT TV CH 8, KUHF FM 88.7 & KUHA FM 91.7] (Houston, TX) Subject: Possibilities. Jim, The first song Charles references is probably “They’re Coming To Take Me Away, Ha Ha,” by Napoleon XIV (1966). As I recall, the flip side of the 45 was the song backwards. I believe the second song he references is either “Shapes Of Things,” by The Yardbirds (1966)…OR…”Shapes Of Things To Come,” by Max Frost And The Troopers (1968). My guess is that The Yardbirds song is the one he is thinking of. Have a great weekend, Andy
