TX NEWSPAPER SCRIBE PENS LAST WORDS To 82 year old Midland, TX resident Jim Servatius, newspapers are his passion for more than four decades reporting, writing and editing. Charlie Spence, former publisher of the Reporter-Telegram, remembers: Servatius was from the old school. You get the story. You get it right. You follow up. You cover your beat. And you cover it well. Jim Servatius, former editor of Vernon Herald, Plainview Herald and Midland Reporter-Telegram, passes away on Wednesday, April 6, 2016.
DOES IHEARTMEDIA FALL TO PIECES? When the U.S. Congress passes the Telecommunications Act of 1996, Clear Channel Communications (iHM’s previous name) goes on a buying spree across America to scoop up every radio station it can. This also means extremely heavy leveraged debt. Clear Channel becomes iHeartMedia with over 850 radio stations. iHM debtors say its $1.4 debt is due in 60 days. Will iHeartMedia toss in the towel? Does this open the doors for mom and pop operations to return to radio?
WILL RADIO RETURN TO ITS PAST? When Telecom Law 1996 becomes law of our land, radio companies consolidate and place their focus on the bottom line and not good radio programming, which is the essence of a strong radio operation. Consolidation removes the local aspect out of radio, takes live announcers off the air and brings chaos to its broadcast day. After iHeartMedia, Cumulus and CBS Radio break up into tiny pieces maybe mom and pop radio ownership will right the wrong that Telecom Law 1996 presents.

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Coming attractions! In November, this year, a new series “Million Dollar Quartet” makes debut on CMT network. Some of Memphis’ greatest musical accomplishments are finally going to rise shine! It’s about the famous picture of Elvis, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash jamming in Phillips Studios here in Memphis. The production is shooting a couple of episodes now here in Memphis. All those were fired up and rolling when I began my career at WHBQ, here in Memphis. I’m their dialect coach…none of the people playing their major parts are from the south, so I teach them how to tawlk suthern! You know of course that the very first time Elvis was played anywhere on the radio, Dewey Phillips played “That’s Alright Momma” in 1954, where I did mornings for 13 years! I’ll keep up with the shenanigans and let you know the exact date and time when it begins. Jack Parnell-former WHBQ Radio morning man and Program Director.
