MATT [The Cat] BALDASSARRI [XM Satellite Radio’s 50s channel] (Salem, MA, District of Columbia) The 45 RPM single turns 67 today! RCA released the first set of 45s to the general public on March 31, 1949. Earlier in March, RCA sent out demos to record dealers to introduce them to this new microgroove format. RCA had been developing microgroove playback on vinyl discs for many years, before several of their engineers defected to Columbia, who beat RCA out of the gate with the release of their 33 1/3 LP format. This is why RCA chose to make the 45 a direct successor to the 78 RPM shellac disc. The large holes in the middle made it easy for jukeboxes and record changers to select and pick up the record and it also made it easy to hold them and carry them about. We were still a few years away from a record player that could play all 3 speeds and so the “Speed Wars” began. 45s from the early to mid-’50s are much more valuable than those issued later on in the decade, since 78s still outsold them until the crossover around 1955 or so. Happy Birthday, 45! You are still a wonderful format!

JACK PARNELL [former Program Director WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) During the run of the telethon, I became friends with Gilley and Bill Anderson. Bill began as the only host, then when he had to be gone for one of them, Gilley came in, and as Bill came back, they co-hosted and did a great job. Gilley was a teeny bit hard to get to know at first, but after one particular show, I arrived at the wrap party a little early, and the only ones there were Gilley and his manager, so we talked until others began to arrive. From that point on, he and I were “buddies”. Remember Frankie Laine from the 40s and 50s? He was on one of the shows, and he and I spent about 2 hours at the wrap party reminiscing about all his great songs. I met a lot of great people there. Interesting about the Jerry Lee album cut!

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas-McKinney, TX) I’ve lived in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, all my life and I’ve been a member of various amateur radio storm watch teams so I’ve seen a lot of storms. I sure hated to see that ‘hit’ on the little radio station up in Atoka as ‘mom and pop’ stations are endangered. We missed the storms here so all is well.

BILL CHERRY [Realtor, In late 1950s Music ’til Dawn host on WWL-870] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio May 13, 2016 [Friday] Issue #1511. Hi, Jim — Yes, I do. The first time I ever saw TV was while standing on a neighbor’s front porch and looking across the street into the living room window of the Ben Levys’ I was 10 so that was 1950. They had a brand new green pictured Hoffman. We didn’t get one until almost 3 years later. It was a 21 inch RCA and I remember my daddy saying he paid $500 for it. That was an enormous amount for my family. Oddly, I preferred radio then and I still do today. Bill
