CHARLESTON RADIO LOSES LOCAL VIP TALENT In April 2011, West Virginia Radio Corporation boots longtime Charleston radio personality Bill Shahan from AM Drive on Top 40 WKAZ FM (107.3) for syndicated John Boy and Billy. Bill sighs: Why do they keep removing all the locals from radio? It really hurts your feelings. One of the best known radio personalities in Kanawha Valley, Bill Shahan, passes away from cancer at 55 Thursday evening, August 25, 2016 in the Hospice Unit of Thomas Memorial Hospital.

MAHAFFEY EXITS KPLX FM Skip Mahaffey plays radio merry go around from morning host on WQYK FM (99.5) Tampa, FL to rival WFUS FM (103.5) from 2004-09. After a jiffy on KVOO FM (98.5) Tulsa, OK Skip leap frogs to KPLX FM (99.5) Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX for a 20-month stopover. Skip’s alma mater WQYK FM is in need of a morning talent. Like in the Kingston Trio tune The M. T. A., will he ever return to WQYK FM? Skip Mahaffey is the man who never returns. What is the next stop on the M. T. A. for passenger Mahaffey?

JIM THOMAS [ex KDSX, KRRV, WFAA-570, KFJZ-1270, KAAM-1310, KMXR, Mix1029 and B97.9] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Mentioned in Newsletter #1540. Hi Jim, I was hired at WFAA in July of 1974 by Ken Summers to do the overnight show, in March of 1976 took over the morning show when he left for Detroit. I left in October 76 for Jacksonville Fla. to do mornings at WMBR, an AC station, I hated it so came back home to Dallas in March of 77, then Peter McClain hired me to do overnights at KFJZ in July 77. Ken Carter left the next year to return to teaching and I took over the oldies show from ’78 thru December 79. Drove a truck for about 6 months then returned to Radio at KAAM in August 1980. I heard you several times on different stations around the Dallas Fort Worth area. Good to read your newsletter too. I’ll keep in touch… Thanks, Jim Thomas (www.70ps.com)

DAN MCCURDY [formerly Charlie & Harrigan-KLIF-1190/KBOX-1480 Dallas, TX/WMEX Boston, MA] (Sherman, TX) Subject: Ken Dowe’s letter… Hey, Jim…Thanks for salvaging some bit o’factual info from my errant offering! I KNEW I had seen the KROW calls as those of a secret FM stash of Gordon’s! Little good the gods will give me for that tiny truth. I’m really sorry, in retrospect, to have concocted the imagined spiel I did! It just seemed to make so much sense, as my storyteller mind spun it. But alas! Before vetting the facts, all the facts, I prematurely concocted the story. And then unadvisedly sent it to you. So now I’m faced with a deserved ‘mea culpa’ to Ken, Bart and the venerated McLendon legacy. Sorry to have exposed JRRR to my less than noble tale. As to the genesis of KBOX from KGKO, I haven’t a clue…Balaban and John Box made that call prior to my gig. Best, Dan McCurdy Sherman, TX

KEN DOWE [CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) I have to be candid and report that I often get quite upset as those who were non-players, or on the periphery during radio’s greatest days, inflate their own importance when usually they were but shadows on the Hall of Fame. And, when they take undeserved credit, or tell untrue tales that defile deserving individuals, they steal real memories and accomplishments. Whomever told Dan that corrupted story is a real putz.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1967, when I’m the noon-3 pm DJ on KPCN-730 in my hometown Dallas, TX one of our DJs, Horace [Hoss] Logan, is the original producer and emcee of the Louisiana Hayride on KWKH-1130 in Shreveport, LA. A very young Elvis Presley is one of the performers. Horace is the first person to say Elvis has left the building. On August 27, 1960 after almost 12½ years on the air, The Louisiana Hayride, known as The Cradle of the Stars, has its last performance on KWKH-1130 in Shreveport, LA.
JAY WEAVER [KLBK-1360 Lubbock/KCUL-1540 Fort Worth/KPCN-730 Grand Prairie/KBUY-1540 Fort Worth] (DFW-Hurst, TX) Jim, two weeks ago I signed up for a trial run on XM Sirius Satellite in an effort to hear something in my car I could stand!! I’m not thrilled about it, but at least I can recognize some of the songs I am hearing!! Jay Weaver
