GARY DELAUNE [KYTY-810 / KLIF-1190 / KENS TV CH 5] (San Antonio, TX) Jim; Sorry to hear about Skipper Lee. He and Charles Porter were great “voices” for the minority community in Houston. Barbra Jordan, Coach Gerald Myers (Texas Tech) and I were honored by Wheatley High School as I always spoke in the sports rally before the Wildcats won their basketball titles in Austin. So Wheatley and Yates Principals asked Skipper and I to do the last football game of segregated teams in 1968. In the days before political correctness, I said, “Now let me introduce, if you’ll excuse my reference, my color analyst today, Skipper Lee of KCOH Radio”. Skipper was laughing as he came on the air and said…”Gary…I’m truly your color man today”. Ah yes…those were the great days when PC wasn’t even in the conscience. When I announced I was leaving KNUZ, Gloria Thomas, director of the drill teams for Wheatley called me and said..”Gary..we’re going to picket KNUZ (1230) for you to say there” assured her I was leaving voluntarily. Great memories from radio of the past. GD (www.garydnews.com)
