TEXAS RADIO STATION BANS MADONNA When faded Pop star Madonna mentions blowing up the White House at the Women’s March in Washington, DC. on Saturday, January 21, 2017 it stirs up controversy. A former Madonna fan says: I am burning all my Madonna CDs and dumping all Madonna MP3 audio. A Texas radio station takes it a little bit farther. When Classic Hits KTTY FM (Hits 105) New Boston-Texarkana, TX drops Madonna from their playlist nearly every major publication picks it up. Groovy!

JACK PARNELL [ex PD/DJ WHBQ-] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Marvell Thomas. Jim: Another member of the Rufus Thomas family died yesterday (January 23). at age 75 years. He was not only a fabulous keyboardist but also a great composer and arranger. He was also a producer for other performers, and much of his work was done at Ardent Studios, here in Memphis. I didn’t know him well, but his father Rufus and I were good friends. He leaves 2 sisters, Carla, who was named “The Memphis Queen” after her international hit “Gee Whiz”, and his other his other sister Vaneese, who is also a singer, who in 1987 had the hit single “Let’s Talk It Over”. Their mother, Lorene Thomas is also still living in Memphis. For many years, the Thomas family has been revered by people around the world. Jack Parnell-former WHBQ dj/program director-Memphis Tn. BTW, Jim, you can get more info about their lives and talents at http://www.memphisdowntowner.com/my2cents-pages/Marvell-Thomas.html

MARY STODDARD [Sam on KVIL FM 1964] (Dallas, TX) Subject: KVIL Pioneered The Role of Female DJs in Broadcasting in 1964. Hi Jim: KVIL REMEMBERED For Its Historical Advancement of Female Broadcasters: KVIL FM 103.7 made Broadcasting History when it was the first station in Texas to hire a Female DJ, KVIL’s Girl-Named-Sam, to take the Midnight to Dawn, “Nightlight” spot, sponsored by Braniff Airways, in 1964. KVIL will always be remembered fondly by me, as the 1st station in Dallas to hire a Female DJ (1964) to go on the air in a Major Texas Market. I consider it a great Honor to have been the one they chose for this historical event. Ours was the #1 rated show in its timeslot (Midnight to Six daily), and was featured in a national magazine’s (TV RADIO MIRROR Oct. 1965) photo shoot & article. I worked with Legendary Ron Chapman at KLIF, earlier in ’64, but left when offered the job at KVIL. My friend, Ron followed me there a few years later. With Gratitude — Mary SAM Stoddard “The SAMMY” Award, TX Radio Hall of Fame, created to recognize the contributions of Women Broadcasters in Texas, since 1964. Mary Nash Stoddard
JOANIE GREEN [KPRC TV CH 2, KZEW FM, KFWD FM, KNOK FM, KAUM FM, KILT FM, KNUZ-1230, Metro Traffic, Houston Taping for the Blind] (Tulsa, OK) Hi Jim, I played jazz from midnight to 6 on KNOK ~ I was the only honkie on the soul station and the program director told me to be prepared for reverse discrimination. I had to go to Sound Warehouse to buy jazz records, do research, etc. Highest compliment I ever got was from a black lady who called me and said, “You don’t play music like a white girl!” Take care and talk with you soon. Joan
TRIVIA ANSWER: On January 22, 1960, WMCA-570 promotes itself by stressing its on-air personalities, The Good Guys, led by program director Ruth Meyer, who is the first female to hold that position in New York City radio.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Tonight I heard a song, Please Don’t Take Her She’s I’ve Got. It was heard on KKYX (680) after they mentioned a 104.9, I first remembering hearing the song on KCWM 99.5. I see KVIL 103.7 has changed Formats. Not that I will listen that much to them. I prefer their HD-2 program of Light Jazz more than current Pop/Rock except if out hearing it Live. 73, KC5RAI
JOHNNY PAYCHECK (May 31, 1938 – February 19, 2003) Let me tell you now, friend Don’t take her, she’s all I’ve got.
