JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-Memphis DJ and PD] (Memphis, TN) Subject: NBC hits 90 years. Well, Chris is already far ahead of me. He moved to L.A. after graduation from North Carolina School of The Arts, spent a year immediate upon graduation as a actor at The Alley Theater in Houston, then coming home for a year to teach Introduction to theater and Film & Video at his high school alma mater…Germantown HS. At the end of that year…he had lived at home and saved all his teaching money. After that year, he headed for Hollywood. If you watch enough TV to see the “Progressive Insurance” commercials, that show a talking box, doing all kinds of lines and, really seem human…he’s the voice of the talking box. That’s interesting about special girl/woman in her part in your life…you obviously were special to her in many ways. JP

GARY DELAUNE [KYTY-810, KLIF-1190, WGAA-570/820, CH 5 KENS TV] (San Antonio, TX) Neiman Marcus fire: Because of my many contacts in the dispatcher’s office of the Dallas Police Department, it allowed me and KLIF (1190) to be first on the scene and such was the case in the cold pre-dawn hours of November 20, 1964. Police Sgt. Gerald Henslee called me at home and said…”Get your azz downtown. Neiman’s is on fire”. My azz and other parts of my anatomy made record time down Central Expressway and we were the first radio station to report from Commerce and Ervay as flames ravaged the 4th and 5th floors and some 400 firefighters battled the blaze for several hours. I’ll never forget standing next to Stanley Marcus doing an interview as tears rolled down his cheeks. The most expensive blaze in Dallas history, between 5-7 million dollars apparently started in an escalator shaft and exploded as reported by the fire chief. In today’s comparative money value…Damage might have been 35-million. Neiman-Marcus re-opened in 27 days. Ah yes…those were the days of total trust between newsmen and cops. (www.garydnews.com)
TRIVIA ANSWER: On February 25, 1972, the BBC, Radio Luxembourg and the Independent Television Authority bans Paul McCartney’s Wings debut single Give Ireland Back to the Irish. However the single gains #1 in the Republic of Ireland and Spain, plus, despite the air-play ban still reaches #16 in the UK and #21 in the U.S.
CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) When I was at WKY in Oklahoma City I did TV and radio. One day after taping the TV program right up to the time I was due on the air ran upstairs in my TV costume and jumped on the air as my first song was ending…my master earphone pot was turned down and I screwed up my song intro. Since whoever did this had to know where the control was on the first floor. I rushed into Danny Williams office to complain that Jerry Kunkle had done this. I assume as a joke…my radio show in those days was deadly serious to me. Jerry was in Danny’s office and I punched him…he went down the hall to tell Lee Allen Smith and when I got off the air at 6:00 pm…i was fired by Danny who said he had no choice….oh well…New York was on the table at the time so I went to the big apple…which I did not enjoy. My problem was working with a director, producer and engineer simply to get a tune started…too many layers for this country boy so…after a year I quit. WABC took three months to finally hire my replacement…and that’s the truth Ruth… (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/)
HENNY YOUNGMAN (March 16, 1906 – February 24, 1998) When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.
