HANKS AWARDS PRESS CORPS On July 9, 1956 movie actor Tom Hanks is born in Concord, CA. We admire many of his movie roles, especially Forrest Gump. In real life, Tom Hanks is a fine person, too. In 2004, when Tom visits the White House he notices journalists in the press area without a coffee pot so he sends them an espresso machine. On Thursday, March 2, 2017 Tom Hanks sends The White House Press Corps another espresso machine with a note: Keep up the good fight for truth, justice and the American way.

JACK PARNELL [ex PD/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) I just got an email from a friend and former part-timer for a station I programmed back in the early 70s. He now owns a company that advises radio stations all around the country, and one of his employees wrote instructions on how to make sure the “powers that be” get their newsmen/jocks to be sure they state their own feelings about all the news, etc. I sent him an answer telling him that we in the “successful” days of radio were always told to “leave our likes and dislikes outside the control room door”….opinion-wise; that the most successful network newsman ever was Walter Cronkite, and even though he was a strong Democrat, the audience never knew it…he read the news and not his opinions. JAY WEAVER [KLBK–1360, Lubbock; KPCN–730, Grand Prairie; KBUY–1540, Fort Worth] (DFW-Hurst, TX) I wish they would move Sean Hannity back to the 8:00 spot, but I guess ratings stop that! Do like Sean! Happy New Year to you and Susie, Jim. Everyone enjoys all of your hard work! Jay

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: my birthday. Now that I’m 82 years of age…I’m and old timer last year I wasn’t…this year I am…what a difference a year makes. I don’t feel like an old timer, but I don’t feel like a spring chicken either. I’m just older. Having a young and beautiful wife helps me stay (feel) young. Take care kids. Chuck (born December 1, 1934)

MIKE MARSHALL [KFJZ-1270, KULF-790, KQUE FM] (Houston, TX) Subject: KULF. I’m sure Jim Shannon is referring to an earlier period at KULF than when I was there, probably just after they changed the call letters. I was hired by PD Bill Wamsley in mid 1974. He needed an all-night guy, which I really wasn’t interested in, but he assured me it was only until a daytime shift opened up. That never happened, (well, actually the shifts opened but he never gave one to me) so I left in June of 1976. When I started, the line up was Jim Tate, mornings, Jim Heath, Joe Bauer, Gary Ryder and me. I even had an all night newsman, Sam Putney. Imagine any station doing that these days. Robert Knowlton and Jim Guidry were on the news staff and Kay Henderson did traffic. Of those, I only know that Tate, Knowlton and Guidry are gone, Jim Guidry just recently. Mike Marshall
TRIVIA ANSWER: On March 10, 1876, Alexander Graham Bell’s first successful test of his new invention, the telephone, in Boston, to assistant: Come here, Watson. I need you.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Charley Pride. I think my favorite song by him is Mountain Of Love. However, I first heard it done by Johnny Rivers. Another I liked was Anybody Going To San Antonio. It is irritating to me when a person says, We can’t do that!” When it is they won’t. The larger the bureau the more paperwork. I know I will get Health Insurance, been with CIGNA since 2014, but looking to find a new Company. Unfortunately, many do not have needed Health Insurance.
GEORGE SCHANK [KUHA/KUHF FM, KSBJ FM engineer] (Houston-Conroe, TX) Jim. Looking forward to another great year of radio news, as Jim Rose Remembers!
SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL (November 30, 1874 – January 24, 1965) There never will be enough for everything while the world goes on. The more that is given the more there will be needed.
Jim Rose and Suzie
Houston, Texas – Laus Deo
