TRIBUNE FALLS UNDER SINCLAIR SABER The dark day that Tribune Media employees dread for weeks finally arrives like Darth Vader. Chicago-based Tribune Media unloads lock, stock and barrel all of its 42 TV stations (including WGN TV in Chicago), shared ownership of digital multicast network Antenna TV, cable network WGN America, Chicago cable station CLTV, almost a third of cable Food Network, and Chicago radio station WGN-720 to Maryland-based Sinclair Broadcasting Group for approximately $3.9 billion.
IS SINCLAIR FOX’S NEW CHALLENGE? The NY Times reports that Sinclair Broadcast Group’s $3.9 billion deal for Tribune Media puts Fox on notice. The Tribune buyout gives Sinclair more heft to mount a challenge to Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News. With the addition of Tribune’s 42 TV stations, Sinclair covers more than 70% of households in the United States. The Tribune buyout transforms Sinclair into the largest local broadcast owner. Sinclair may woo Fox Conservative viewership with former Fox stars like Bill O’Reilly.
CBS RADIO CUTS BIG NAMES IN BIG D As time draws nigh to Entercom’s takeover of CBS Radio, CBS whacks several familiar voices and names from powerhouse KRLD-1080 Dallas, TX. Perhaps the biggest name is Charley Jones, longtime host of Texas Overnight on KRLD-1080 and TSN. Another familiar name, J.D. Ryan, whose 17-years on CBS Radio includes Around Town and Texas Road Trippin’. Also gone are Sports anchor-reporter Roger Emrich (20-year KRLD-1080 vet) and Reporter/Assistant ND Matt Thomas (since 2006).

JACK PARNELL [ex PD/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Afternoon Jim: Shirley and I had 2 Siamese cats, not at the same time, but our last one was with us for 19 years, and his kidneys failed, so we had to quit fighting a losing battle and have him put to sleep. That was when both our kids were still here. I’m allergic to cats anyway, so I told Shirley that I didn’t think I could tolerate another cat. Well, 4 years ago, we found a 3 week old solid black kitten in our attic, but no mama cat. You guessed it…we had to keep him…his name is Bo…short for Mr. Bojangles…we thought at first that he was feral, but he’s fine now…stays up here in the studio when I’m working. He loves to nap on the sofa…ALL DAY! Like you said we don’t know what we’d do if he leaves us. JP

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-Retired 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Hey Jim, here’s a tiny tidbit of factoid trivia about Jeopardy. For years, from 1964 thru 1973, Don Pardo introduced the host with “Now, here’s the STAR of Jeopardy, Art FLEMING! The show took a break after 1973, but Merv Griffin revived it in 1984 with Alex Trebek and announcer Johnny Gilbert. Trebek didn’t like being called the “Star” of the show because he felt the contestants are the real “stars”. He insisted that he be introduced simply as the “Host”. He got his wish and that’s the way it is. Jim Bell, who came very close to being a contestant on Jeopardy back in the 90s.

BILL CHERRY [Realtor, In late 1950s Music ’til Dawn host on WWL-870] (Dallas, TX) Jim, I love that old radio stuff that Chuck Dunaway copies and emails to so many of us. I’m just old enough to remember 90% of the programs from back then. I got a First Phone from Elkins’ by riding the bus to and from Galveston to Houston one summer when I was about to graduate from high school. This experience taught me this: A First Phone does nothing for turning one’s pipes into replicate those of KRLD’s Mitch Carr. Neither do smoking or whiskey. It sure didn’t teach me how to repair anything. Bill Cherry
