In August 1967, Harvey becomes one of the original WCBS-880 news staffers when it flips to All-News. For years, the universally loved Harvey Hauptman is the silk-voiced news anchor who writes flawless news copy and delivers it on the air like no one else. Longtime WCBS-880 reporter Rich Lamb sighs: Harvey was a true professional. On Wednesday morning, August 2, 2017 Harvey Hauptman expires at 87.
WKRP IN CINCINNATI Crosley literature in the 1930s brags that its 135-ton tower is taller than the Washington Monument (558 feet) and Cincinnati’s 49-story Carew Tower (574 feet). Taller than the 41-story Great American Tower at Queen City Square (660 feet). WLWT and WCET-TV still use the tower. WKRP in Cincinnati’s opening zooms in on the original WLWT tower. WLW-700’s new radio tower and historic transmitter building on Tylersville Road casts shadows on retail stores, restaurants and offices beneath it.

JEFF THOMPSON [NBC NEWS, 30 Rockefller Plaza-Thompson Communications] (Winston-Salem, NC) Subject: Thanks for the fond memories of Texas Radio.& TV! Especially when you publish comments from my talented old colleagues, like Jim Bell & Mike Marshal, who worked with me at the radio station I built & managed, KMSC across the street from NASA’s Manned Spacecraft Center, now JSC. on the outskirts of Houston. Our interactions with the space officials, flight controllers, astronauts & their families as steps were being made to reach the moon…were awesome, and truly unforgettable! As was Col. John “Shorty” Powers, former NASA head of Public Affairs, who eventually joined me at the microphone to tell the world about those advances via United Press International Radio Network, plus my own gigs on the USIA’s Voice of America. Prior to that, while earning a Radio/TV degree from UT, I had worked in Austin at KUT-FM, KAZZ-FM, KTBC Radio & TV doing gigs with the late, great Cactus Prior. Plus, I was named Program Director for Radio KASE, which we had renamed & relocated to the Commodore Perry Hotel near the Texas Capitol Bldg.. Yeah! Those were the days!!

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) At about the same time in the early sixties, businessman Leroy Gloger bought KRCT AM in Pasadena, changed the calls to KIKK, and changed Houston’s Country Music scene forever. Gloger wanted the Uptown Country style Chet Atkins was pioneering in Nashville, so he threw out the drawling hayseed announcers and hired polished professional uptown jocks from the Pop Music stations. Bailey was one of his first hires and his first Program Director. Bailey hired other pop jocks and lured the infamous “tell-it-like-it is” news-caster Richard Dobbyn away from KILT. Together Bailey and Dobbyn made KIKK AM and FM the most listened-to stations in Houston. Under Bailey’s guidance, KIKK trademarked the famous “Boot-I-Boot-Boot” logo and the “I’m a KIKKER” and “KIKK-UP Truck” bumper stickers. Bailey holds the distinct honor of sending the first Country music to the moon when he gave a cassette tape.

MIKE MARSHALL [former DJ on KNOK-970, KBOX-1480, KFJZ-1270, AFN-BERLIN, WFAA-820/570, KPRC-950, KXYZ-1320, KULF-790, KQUE FM, KBME-790] (Houston, TX) In 74, I lost a job I really loved at KXYZ, ABC O&O at the time, when they switched from “Gentle on Your Mind” music by the Living Strings to rock overnight. I did a few weekends with that format which surprised me that the new PD would hire me for part time after letting me go. Shortly after that I interviewed with Bill Wamsley, the PD at KULF. He didn’t have anything at the time, but he called me a couple of months later after I had started a job as manager of Home Entertainment’s store in Memorial. He offered me all night which I didn’t want but he promised me it would only be till a daytime shift opened. I started in the summer of 74. About three daytime shifts opened and every time Bill told me he just had to give it to a new guy but I would definitely get the next one. When he left in June of 76, I quit, the last full time job I had in radio.
TRIVIA ANSWER: On Sunday, August 6, 1982, WQXI-790 in Atlanta, GA is the 1st radio station to use Harris Corp AM stereo system.
