COOL HAND STANTON MEETS HIS MATCH We all enjoy watching Harry Dean Stanton in the many character roles he performs. Many of us do not realize his singing talents. In Cool Hand Luke he sings Just a Closer Walk With Thee. He also sings and plays the harmonica to Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain. Harry Dean Stanton movies we enjoy include Red Dawn (1984), Christine (1984), The Rose (1979) and The Godfather Part II (1975). On Friday, September 15, 2017 beloved movie actor Harry Dean Stanton passes away at 91.

HFD TELLS HOUSTON FIREFIGHTERS TO STAY HOME During Hurricane Harvey’s aftermath, the Houston Police Department loses Sgt. Steve Perez after he accidentally drives into high water. The Houston Fire Department is the third-largest Fire Department in America. But, as Hurricane Harvey’s flood waters cause Houston’s streets to disappear all across the city, a large piece of Houston’s fire responders are told to stay home. Firefighters are never fully recalled for Ike or Allison or the Memorial Day Floods or even the Tax Day Floods.

JEFF THOMPSON [ex NBC NEWS, 30 Rockefeller Plaza-Thompson Communications] (Winston-Salem, NC) Subject: Glad ya’ll are Okay. Hearing awful things about destruction in Dickinson, (where I used to live,) League City, etc…but no body is mentioning how the Space Center area is doing. That’s where I built & ran radio station, KMSC (in the “Shadow of the Manned Spacecraft Center.”) How are the folks, scientists, engineers etc. fairing up there? Hope all is well. KMSC was just across the road, 528. I wish them all the best.

CHRISTOPHER [KIP] ALLEN (KFUO-850) (St. Louis, MO) Subject: Harvey. Jim Rose, So glad to hear you’re okay. My station, KFUO, is doing a lot of coverage here in Saint Louis. As the official radio station of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, we’re following our Disaster Response team as it works with local congregations and officials. I interviewed Tim Roth, the digital sales manager for KHOU (TV CH 11) and a member of Trinity Klein Lutheran Church in Katy (TX) about their rescue and recovery efforts. Tim and I go back to KGMO in Cape Girardeau, Mo, in the ‘70s. I was the news guy and Tim (air name Tim McKay) our premier jock. Kip Allen KFUO, Saint Louis
BILL CHERRY [Realtor, In late 1950s Music ’til Dawn host on WWL-870] (Houston, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1649) September 08, 2017 [Friday] Jim, I did get it to load this time. Thanks be to God. I love the story about your abandoned car, the deacon and your girlfriend. You’re definitely living right. Walter Hammock, you probably know, lost everything he owned. People our age just shouldn’t be subjected to that kind of major misery. He’s attempting to raise some money to help him in his recovery. Patty and I sent him a small bit. Bill Cherry
DAN ROSEN [Professor at Chuo University] (Tokyo-Kamakura, Japan) Subject: Be safe, be well. Dear Jim, Watching the video of Houston under water has been hard, but not nearly as hard as being right in the middle of the storm, as you and your millions of neighbors have been. Houston is a great city with a can-do spirit. I know it will be restored in time. My hopes and prayers go to you and to all those affected by the hurricane. Dan Rosen (KTRK (TV), 1976-79) (currently in Australia)
TRIVIA ANSWER: On September 2, 1963 The CBS Evening News with anchor Walter Cronkite is network television’s first half-hour weeknight news broadcast, lengthens from its original 15 minutes.
BILL INGRAM [Remote Operations/Traffic Reporter KSBJ FM] (Houston-Cleveland, TX) Subject: Glad you are ok. Jim, If you’re car is till where you left it, you can always just get it towed to the mechanic that is going to work on it. Chances are good, it was towed. If it is not where you left it… Please understand MANY cars were towed, and the City of Houston had them towed to a lot somewhere. There is a website you can go to. It’s findmytowedcar.com… or email@example.com. Or you can contact these phone numbers: 832-394-4869 or 281-943-6720 I pray you find your car soon. I’m assuming your need is medical. Go to those websites, and call those numbers that’s a good start. God bless you guys, Bill Ingram
JOHN LENNON (October 9, 1940 – December 8, 1980) It was like being in the eye of a hurricane. You’d wake up in a concert and think, Wow, how did I get here?
