TV MOVIE HISTORY EXPERT FILES FINAL REPORT Movie connoisseur and reporter Robert Osborne gives us film fans fascinating film history along with his encyclopedic knowledge and love of films as host of Turner Classic Movies since the cable TV programs’ beginning in 1994. On March 6, 2017, 6′ 1″ film historian Robert Osborne passes away at 84 in New York City, NY. This reminds us of Pop singer Carly Simon’s 1977 tune Nobody Does It Better.

Fred completes an almost unbroken 64 year span that begins on tiny 250-watt WOL-1450 and continues until September 27, 2011 on WAMU FM (88.5). MUMS THE WORD ON UPCOMING ESPN LAYOFFS According to The NYPost, ESPN seeks to cut hundreds of millions of dollars from its budget. ESPN reps deny the cuts are that high. In recent years, ESPN agrees to pay the NFL an average $1.9 billion a year, up from $1.1 billion under the previous deal. The NBA gets $1.4 billion a year in ESPN cash, up from $575 million annually under the previous deal. MLB receives $75 million a year, up more than 800 percent from the $8 million annual cost in the previous deal.
IHEART NOT IF, BUT WHEN According to Variety: it is just a question of WHEN iHeartMedia declares bankruptcy and reorganizes, not IF it will do so. Clear Channel is a byproduct of President Clinton’s disastrous 1996 Telcom Law. On September 16, 2014, Clear Channel Communications becomes iHeartMedia hoping to get out from its over $20 billion dollar debt, the debt is still there and it worsens. According to Variety: many analysts expect (iHeartMedia) to declare bankruptcy in the next year or two.
TRIVIA QUESTION: What is the first Commission created to regulate radio use as the public interest, convenience, or necessity requires? The answer appears below.

JACK PARNELL [ex PD/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Morning Jim: Have you seen the Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter & especially Obama, TRUTHS that they deported many many muslims, and NOBODY on the Democratic or Republican side even said a word about it? Not only that, but the Media Mongrels have not said a word about it either. They only print/broadcast what they like. That’s closely akin to my radio days, when Hugh Frizzell our PD at WHBQ for a few years, always told us: “When you go on the air leave your likes and dislikes of songs outside the control room door, and remember every record you play is somebody’s favorite song.” JP

GARY DELAUNE [KYTY-810, KLIF-1190, WFAA-570/820, CH 5 KENS TV] (San Antonio, TX) Dallas memories. It was Saturday, November 5, 1960. SMU winless all season, against Texas A&M, only win 14-0 over Trinity University in San Antonio. A scheduled 2 p.m. kick off in the Cotton Bowl. I was in the WFAA newsroom across town and Kevin March (aka Ted Brown) was roaming in one of the KLIF (1190) news units. A call for a possible D.O.A at La Cabana on Stemmons. He radioed that it was a slow day so he’d check it out. He arrived with a police officer and they went to the room on an upper floor. They entered with a hotel manager and discovered the victim was on the bathroom floor blocking the door. They pushed their way in and discovered it was popular movie actor Ward Bond. One of John Wayne’s closest buddies had died of a heart attack. He was in town to attend the game after having filmed the 9th series episode of that season’s “Wagon Train”. Score of the game; A scoreless tie; One of the most popular songs on KLIF: “Now or Never” by Elvis. (www.garydnews.com)

MARY STODDARD [Sam on KVIL FM 1964] (Dallas, TX) Subject: KVIL Pioneered The Role of Female DJs in Broadcasting in 1964. Hi Jim, I did a few practice runs with an engineer there before the end of 1964. I got my FCC License in Jan. 1965 and didn’t need the station’s engineer or one of the licensed DJs to be there all night with me after that, but my dear friend and mentor, Hugh Lampman (the Nightlight Host I replaced), left in Dec. ’64 and I officially went on the air as “Sam” the first of January, 1965. Ironically, the fan who sent me my first “Fan Mail” at the station, Jan. 27th, 1965, just today established contact with me again…after 52 years! I’d been searching for him, but was never able to find him again until today! He had such wonderful things to say about my work as the Nightlight Host I was astonished. I am finally able to send the autographed photo he requested 52 years ago, and I am hoping to meet him and his wife for coffee soon to relive some of the memories! Interesting to hear about you and your Elkins Institute buddies. I recall having lots of listeners who also went to Elkins. Make mine a “Dublin Dr. Pepper” please? All best to you & Suzie – Mary “Sam” Stoddard TX Radio Hall of Fame’s “Sammy” Award Namesake
